1st report 2 August 1999The shawl languished, point edging garter went forward --a mindless 12 row pattern that, once corrected & learned, practically knit itself. As of yesterday (1 August) I've concluded that I will simply attach it to satin encased elastic, graft the edges together and call it complete.I finally managed to frog the shawl back on the Sunday and as of today am making forward progress with it using the design elements that spouse and I agreed upon on the last Tuesday we had together. I find myself thinking of it as my mourning shawl. It is, after all, the last project that I will ever have spouse's input on. I don't suppose many people will have a "mourning" shawl in rich raspberry wool crepe but then, perhaps more should. 2nd report 19 August 1999The mourning shawl has less than 50 stitches on the needles as the centre square nears completion. Now comes the pick up the edge stitches and decide on edge treatments.3rd report 30 August 1999I have not had a brilliant few weeks but I am happy to report that, after several escapes from the stitch holder and errors in picking up stitches, the shawl is back on track with my four trapezoids being worked all at once in the round.Using a cone of blue wool crepe of the same weight, I played with a few different treatments, abandoned several and have shelved a few for future projects. Current thinking is 3 bands -- 2 basic garter with a centre band done in birds' eye -- to give a bit of open work and a somewhat more organic feel and finishing with the Christening Dress wide edging from the Schiffmann book. |
