I've a bit of a reputation for knitting with almost anything. . . well deserved, I admit. I've been excited about knitting with wire for some time. Lucy Neatby's wonderful earrings charmed me and when my Stitches West 1999 brochure offered a class by Nancie Wiseman my interest was heightened. I was too late in 1999, (waiting list blues) so I made sure I didn't miss it in 2000 and I'm addicted. When Leigh Witchel (how many knitting names can you drop in one .html file?) was soliciting donations for the 2000 Dance As Ever (brilliant ballet company) Great Knitter's Auction and Raffle, I knew he wanted that improved Señor Frog but he got a knitted pointe shoe instead. I took the snap at left before suffering separation anxiety and shipping this original design (three weeks to design and three hours to knit) off to NYC. 2000's effort was 28 gauge wire and 3 mm needles. For 2002's auction, I got a bit crazy -- size 32 gauge wire, size 11 iridescent red beads, and size 2.5mm needles. I know it took longer to thread the beads than to knit and last year's three hours expanded to three days. Same design as last year with a seamless construction and short row shaping. Mary's pictures on Leigh's web page were much better than mine Auction ended 20 September 2002 and it found a happy home in NYC. |
