A tale of two triangles

There are two ways to knit a centre out triangle Geometric (method courtesy of Joan Schrouder) and Swirl (method from Mary Thomas).

The Geometric Triangle

This triangle is an equilateral triangle with very strong geometric lines.

To knit a Geometric Triangle -- cast on 9 stitches, divide evenly onto three needles, join, do not twist, knit with a fourth

  • Round 1: Knit -- place markers on either side of the centre stitch on each needle
  • Round 2: (Knit to marker, increase, move marker, knit 1, move marker, increase 1 knit to end of needle)3x (15 stitches total 5 per needle)
  • Round 3: Repeat Round 2
  • Repeat Rounds 1 through 3

The Swirl Triangle

This triangle, after the first set up round, increases every round thereafter. A double YO (yarn over) is worked at the start of each needle. The 2nd YO is dropped on the next round.

To knit a Swirl Triangle -- cast on 6 stitches, divide evenly onto three needles, join, do not twist, knit with a fourth

  • Round 1: Knit
  • Round 2: (YO2x, knit to end of needle)3x
  • Round 3: (YO2x, knit 1, drop 2nd YO of prior row, knit to end of needle)3x
  • Repeat Round 3

Like all other swirl increase polygons it has an organic feel. Some people embrace this as a special design feature and others do not care for it at all. If a more regimented shape is desired, this triangle can be be blocked into submission. This triangle, may need a bit of blocking to lie flat. The unblocked triangle is shown above and the blocked triangle is shown below:
