The elephant hat

My co-worker Irene spends most of the end of the year doing detail work decorating Rose Parade floats.
We're not talking "petal pusher" we're talking serious knows her seeds and stuff to render realistic and sometimes ridiculously cute animals. Check out the Rainbird float come New Years Day for an idea of the skill.

Anyhow, a couple of years ago, the Rainbird float featured African Elephants and we thought an elephant hat would be just the thing for a Hanukah present and to wear while watching over the float in the wee small hours of new years day.

Not finding a suitable knit elephant hat, I designed one. The original was knit in Woolease in Oxford Grey. The pink and lighter grey later versions (read pattern validation) are in the first image below. In addition to testing it myself I've had two test knitters validate the pattern. I violated my usual rule of not knitting any yarn with my name in it and did the lighter grey in the Heather Grey Woolease.

Sadly, the pink (perfect for a pink elephant has been discontinued) so the hunt for a suitable replacement in Encore or another comparable yarn is an ongoing project. Interestingly enough I was unable to achieve gauge in white Woolease. And yes, there are short rows involved.
