Bunnies and Bears

At one point in my knitting I was heavily into knitting bears, bunnies, dolls and the like. I suspect it had something to do with my love of sculpture (soft and otherwise) and trying to do with my knitting what I used to do with sewing (animal puppets were a big specialty back in the day). Anyhow, one year I think I made at least two dozen assorted animals and I had bunny and bear parts all over the place.

Many, if not all of those sweet little and not so little creatures ended up in the hands of the young at heart rather than the young of years.

A note on knitting animals -- crap acrylic is fine. Using smaller needles than called for and twisting your stitches helps to make a firmer fabric is a good way to ensure that fibre fill does not escape. Beads and buttons make great eyes but not for kids. Embroidery floss can be your friend. The bunny heads for Debbie Bliss' look rather remarkably like olives and her recipe for bear ears make wonderful eyelids for frogs and elephants.
